Second Gear --- July 2010

From the desk of the GMC Corvette Set President

As many of you know I have a real interest in Motorsports. That’s probably what first got me interested in Corvettes originally. So when I heard that the National Corvette Museum had proposed to build a Motorsport Park across the street from the Museum, my first idea was “Sweet”! They are well under way with the proposed 400-acre multi-purpose race track. Tom Wallace, former Corvette Chief Engineer, has joined with the Museum to promote and develop the track. His focus will be on fundraising, corporate sponsorships and planning for track operation. Corvette Racing/Pratt & Miller Engineering has joined the team effort by donating their time and talents in helping design track.

The Motorsports Park will me made up of two road courses, a Karting track, autocross track, skid pad area, and a 1/4 mile drag strip.. The facility will meet SCCA specifications with a control tower, paddock areas, fuel station and maintenance shop. The overall layout will be modeled after world-famous tracks like Le Mans, Nurburging and Watkins Glen. The park will be one of the most centrally located and easily accessible driving facilities in the country. The NCM will be committed to three separate areas of priority for the use of the facility.

1. The construction of a multi-function motorsports park.
2. The establishment of a comprehensive educational facility for conducting
   science, technology, and engineering programs.
3. The implementation of a state of the art teen driver safety program.

All programs will include both classroom and hands on training.

To make a big venture like this successful, the track needs to be utilized a good bit of the time. The design of the track will be very useful for testing, not only for manufacturers but also to race teams that want to prepare for tracks like Le Mans. Hopefully the track will build enthusiasm for all Corvette owners. They’ll be able to say that not only do we have our own Museum, but we also have a track that we can use. People who come to the Museum and visit the track will discover a love for this kind of driving and it will give them the opportunity to learn more about their car and the fun they can have with it.

Depending on fundraising ( est. cost of 35 million) they are looking at ground breaking in 2011 and having the track running in 2012. It has been a few years since our club has been to the Museum, and the new addition to the Museum is now complete. If all goes as planned I would like to head-up a new road trip in the fall of 2012 to the Museum and Motorsports Park. Wouldn’t it be something to say “ I drove down the Le Mans straight”. I’ll keep you up to date on the progress and plans for the trip.
